Influence Of Corneal Astigmatism In Patients Implanted With A Full Visual Range Inverted Meniscus IOL

Purpose: The aim was to evaluate the influence of small amounts of corneal astigmatism in patients implanted with two different models of a non-toric inverted meniscus intraocular lens (IOL) – the ArtIOLs® 40 and ArtIOLs® 70 (ArtIOLs, Voptica SL, Murcia, Spain) designed to extend the range of vision.
Setting: Oftalvist Murcia, Spain
Methods: A total of 117 eyes with pre-operative corneal astigmatism ≤ 1.00 D were implanted with ArtIOLs® (67 ArtIOLs® 40 and 60 with ArtIOLs® 70). Postoperative subjective refraction and best corrected (BCVA) and uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) were measured at one month after surgery.
Results: Mean ± SD pre-operative corneal astigmatism was -0.50 ± 0.23 D and -0.54 ± 0.26 D for ArtIOLs® 40 and ArtIOLs® 70, respectively. Post-operative spherical equivalent was on average -0.20 ± 0.24 D for ArtIOLs® 40 and -0.25 ± 0.23 D ArtIOLs® 70. Mean BCVA and UCVA were -0.03 ± 0.05 and -0.02 ± 0.05 logMAR for ArtIOLs® 40 and -0.02 ±
0.05 and 0.00 ± 0.06 logMAR for ArtIOLs® 70. The difference between BCVA and UCVA was 0.02 logMAR for ArtIOLs® 40 and ArtIOLs® 70. 82% of the patients had no difference between BCVA and UCVA, while 99% had a difference of 0.1 logMAR or less.
Conclusions: Both models of a new inverted meniscus IOL designed to extend the depth of focus ArtIOLs® 40 (EDF) and ArtIOLs® 70 (FVR) provide excellent uncorrected visual acuity showing no influence of pre-operative corneal astigmatism up to 1.00 D.
