Purpose: The aim was to evaluate the depth of focus and visual quality in patients who received two refractive IOLs, EDF ArtIOLs® 40 and FVR ArtIOLs® 70 (ArtIOLs, Voptica SL, Murcia, Spain). These lenses generate low (ArtIOLs® 40) and moderate (ArtIOLs® 70) negative spherical aberration, enhancing depth of focus, while the inverted meniscus design improves peripheral optical performance.
Setting: Oftalvist Murcia, Spain
Methods: 83 patients were implanted bilaterally with ArtIOLs® 40 and ArtIOLs® 70, aiming to provide full range of vision. One month best corrected monocular and binocular defocus curve was measured from +1.00 to -3.00 in 0.50 D steps. Monocular and Binocular UCVA were measured at far, 66 and 40 cm. Measurements were taken using SLOAN charts under photopic conditions. Additionally, 64 patients completed the Patient Reported Spectacle Independence Questionnaire (PRSIQ).
Results: For ArtIOLs® 40, monocular BCVA at far, intermediate and near were -0.05, 0.12 and 0.35, respectively, while for ArtIOLs® 70 were -0.05, 0.02 and 0.20 logMAR. Binocular BCVA were -0.06, 0.00 and 0.17 at far, intermediate and near distance. Monocular UCVA for far was -0.02 and 0.03 logMAR, 0.07 and -0.01 at 66 cm and 0.30 and 0.10 logMAR at 40 cm for ArtIOLs® 40 and ArtIOLs® 70, respectively. Binocular UCVA was 0.15 logMAR or better at all distances. All patients reported to be comfortable at all distances all time or most of the time without glasses.
Conclusions: ArtIOLs® 40 and ArtIOLs® 70 fulfil the requirements of the new ISO 11979-7 for Extended Deph of Focus IOLs and Full Visal Range IOLs, respectively. Furthermore, the patients implanted binocularly with ArtIOLs® 40 and ArtIOLs® 70 achieved excellent vision at all distances. High percentage of spectacle independence was achieved.
