Purpose: To measure the in-vivo axial intraocular lens (IOL) position of two models of a full visual range inverted meniscus IOL (ArtIOLs, Voptica SL, Murcia, Spain) which extend the depth of focus by different amounts of negative spherical aberration. The IOL position was compared with standard biconvex designs and were used to evaluate the effect on retinal image magnification.
Setting: Oftalvist Murcia, Spain
Methods: 69 and 79 eyes were implanted with ArtIOLs® 40 (EDF) and ArtIOLs® 70 (FVR) respectively, which had Cloop haptics. Biconvex IOLs were implanted in two other groups, one with C-loop haptics (28 eyes) and the other with Double C-loop haptics (20 eyes). 3 months after surgery, the IOL position was measured using the aqueous depth (AQD), that is the distance between the corneal endothelium and the anterior surface of the IOL. For the measurement, Anterion OCT system (Heidelberg Engineering) was used in the manual option. The nodal points of the real eyes and the image magnifications were calculated using the software Zemax OpticStudio.
Results: The mean values of AQD were 4.42±0.29 and 4.41±0.29 mm for ArtIOLs® 40 and 70 respectively. In eyes implanted with biconvex c-loop IOL, the mean AQD was 4.39±0.22 mm, and no statistically significant difference was found between groups. On the contrary, mean AQD of Double C-loop biconvex IOL was 4.24±0.30 mm, being the difference with c-loop IOLs statistically significant (p<0.05). This IOL position involve a displacement around 0.10 mm towards the retina of the nodal points of the eye and a minor change of retinal image size of only 0.60%.
Conclusions: ArtIOLs® unique inverted meniscus shape could lead us to think these IOLs were located closer to the retina. However, this study has found that the IOL position was similar to bincovex C-loop IOLs. The differences with other standard IOLs will depend mainly on haptics, but the effect on retinal image size should be negligible.
